One carries the light.
One reaches back.
Thirteen-year-old Tyatt and ten-year-old Boad begin by arguing about who is braver. Their journey asks something harder of them: protecting a small light, helping each other through danger, and looking again when fear makes the world seem simple.
A traveler named Vissar points the way through the snowy mountain. The brothers still have to choose how they will make it together.
Room for a conversation.
After reading, ask a question and let your child lead the answer.
- What changes when the brothers stop trying to outdo each other?
- Can you be afraid and brave at the same time?
- When might looking again help you understand someone better?
High Above the Valley
High above the sleeping valley, where jagged peaks touched the stars, two brothers guarded a golden lantern.
Tyatt was thirteen. He was older, taller, and sure he was braver.
“I’d cross a river in the dark to protect this light,” he said.
Boad, who was ten, lifted his chin. “I’d cross a river of fire.”
“The lantern keeps every hearth in the valley warm,” Tyatt said. “This is serious.”
“I know,” said Boad. “That’s why I would be better at it.”
They argued so loudly that neither noticed the wind begin to rise.
Neither saw the golden flame flicker.
